LPG cos fail to act against fraudsters against fake gas-stove inspectors

The petroleum companies — providing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders — have failed to register FIR against people who cheated consumers by posing as employees of these companies and sold fake insurance scheme of Rs 2 lakh for Rs 45 in the name of gas stove inspection.

"Our distributors have informed the local police about people who fake their identity to inspect gas stoves and sell fake insurance coverage for a sum of Rs 45. But, as of now, no FIR has been registered," said a senior official from one of the petroleum companies.

It should be noted that several cases of gas leaks were reported in the month of November and December across Nashik district. While this is happening, neither the gas companies, nor district supply office has taken any cognisance of the ongoing insurance scam.

"The risks of handling LPG are better known to the people. Hence, inspection drive has been undertaken by LPG companies. During this drive every consumer has to pay Rs 150 for tests where only gas stove, cylinder and rubber hose are inspected for safety and in case the rubber hose fails the test, it is replaced for an optimal charge," the officer said.

He added, "A small amount of Rs 45 to 50 per check-up and insurance attracts people from the slums. They are also the ones who have least awareness about LPG cylinders and are prone to accidents. Insurance cover is already provided by petroleum companies. Hence, people should not believe any touts."

He also pointed out all petroleum companies were conducting a special campaign in slum areas to get the LPG connections checked and advised the manner in which it has to be handled. "We have jointly conducted more than 10,000 inspections for residential consumptions in slums where the consumers cannot afford inspection. They were carried out for free. Thus, we appeal to the people not to believe any scamster," the officers said.

District supply officer Sarita Narke said she was not aware of any such issue and that she would ask the respective companies to make their statement. "We will ask the respective companies to clarify their stand after we go through the issue," Narke said.
